The Long Island Iced Tea is a beloved and refreshing cocktail that has gained popularity around the world. It has a fascinating history, with multiple claims to its origins and a wide range of variations. In this article, we will dive into the true story behind the Long Island Iced Tea, uncovering its origins, classic recipe, evolution, and cultural impact.
Unsubstantiated Origin Stories: The “Long Island” Connection
Two intriguing origin stories add to the mystique of the Long Island Iced Tea. Both tales are associated with the geographical region of Long Island, adding a touch of local lore to the cocktail’s history.
Old Man Bishop and the Prohibition Era
One tale of Long Island Iced Tea’s origins takes us back to the 1920s during the country’s Prohibition era. It is said that the drink is attributed to a figure known as Charlie “Old Man” Bishop, who was believed to be an illegal liquor distiller. According to this story, Bishop created the drink on “Long Island,” a small island in the Holston River located in Kingsport, Tennessee.
During a time when alcohol was illegal and scarce, there was a strong desire for drinks to be stronger. As a result, Old Man Bishop wanted to craft a potent concoction that would look and taste like iced tea, but that would also be full of alcohol and pack a wicked punch.
According to legend, Bishop even passed down the recipe to his son Ransom, who refined it during the 1940s. Despite the popularity of this origin story and there being little evidence to support it, this origin story adds an air of intrigue to the drink’s history and an interesting wrinkle to the Prohibition era.
Robert Butt, a Long Island Story
Another origin story suggests that the Long Island Iced Tea wasn’t invented until the 1970s. However, within this version, the tale ties the cocktail’s creation to our homeland Long Island here in New York. It is said that a bartender named Robert Butt, hailing from Long Island, created the Long Island Iced Tea in the 1970s. There are three versions floating around about how Butt came to actually create the cocktail.
Version 1: The 1972 Cocktail Clash
As a former bartender at the Oak Beach Inn, Butt claims to have invented the drink as his entry in a 1972 cocktail-crafting competition contest where he was tasked to create an original cocktail featuring triple sec.
Version 2: Smoothing Out the Wrinkles
Another version suggests Butt created the drink after being tasked to come up with a new mixed drink that would mask the strong taste of cheap liquors, allowing patrons to enjoy their drinks without wrinkling their noses.
Version 3: End of Season Spirits
In this version, Butt was said to have created the drink as a way to use up extra spirits at the end of the season, and the recipe quickly caught on among locals.
Regardless of which version is true, the exact details of Butt’s story and the drink’s connection to Long Island are subject to speculation. Nevertheless, these elements contribute an additional level of allure to the cocktail’s captivating history.
A Product of the 80s?
Whichever story you believe, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the Long Island Iced Tea really took off across the United States. It became a go-to drink for college students and party-goers, and was featured in movies and TV shows as a symbol of wild and crazy fun.
